Letter from the Editor
Introduction Prof Rossi
Dear Friends and everyone,
I am deeply and sincerely honored to be selected as the new Editor of the IAP Bullettin and am excited about assuming this new role and experience. First, I would like to share with you the story of my academic career and the fulfillment that this appointment within a global organization such as IAP brings to it.
I received my medical degree (MD) followed by a residency in Anatomic Pathology and a PhD from the Catholic University in Rome, Italy. Then I was an international observer in surgical pathology and cytopathology at the University of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University (both in Philadelphia), Gustave Roussy (Paris), and the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP). I am currently the Director of Cytopathology and Endocrine Pathology at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS and an Associate Professor of Pathology at Catholic University, also with the title of Full Professor. My diagnostic and research fields of interest and expertise are: Endocrine pathology, Head and Neck pathology especially salivary glands, and Cytopathology. I have authored and co-authored more than 300 original articles, reviews, and book chapters on endocrine pathology, cytopathology , and head and neck pathology. I co-authored 8 books and served as co-editor of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology, as well as for the new second edition. I also served as one of the three lead authors for the revisions to the Bethesda Thyroid FNA Classification System, second edition, and the lead author for the chapter on undifferentiated carcinoma for the third edition. I contributed chapters to the WHO Classifications of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors, Head and Neck Tumors, Pediatric Tumors, and Tumors of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues. I delivered numerous lectures, workshops, and short courses at national and international meetings including USCAP, ASC, ASCP, CAP, ECC, ICC, ESP, IAP, and SIAPEC. I am currently the president of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology; European Chair of the World Tumor Registry for Thyroid; Head of the Webinars for the International Academy of Cytology (IAC), co-chair of the Scientific Committee for the European Federation of Cytology Society. Associate Editor of Cytopathology and Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology, and I served in the past on the editorial boards of many pathology journals, such as Virchow Archives, Human Pathology, Pathologica, Cancer Cytopathology, Diagnostic Cytopathology. I was awarded the best Intenational Cytopathologist by the American Society of Cytopathology in 2022, and the Totten Award from Pittsburgh University in 2026.
During the past few years, the healthcare systems faced challanges and difficulties, including staffing shortages and the global crisis of COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed pathologists to recognize new opportunities in education and teaching to circumvent them.
I would like to invite all of you to join IAP in advancing its mission which advocates for pathology education globally and to promote its role worldwide. Looking at the scenario in histopathology and cytopathology, we are facing new exciting technological advancements, such as digital pathology and artificial intelligence, which will have significant challenges to the pathology world.
My guiding philosophy in my work, be it the pathology practice &/or professional societies has always been ‘“a team is more than the sum of its members: It is a dynamic totality of interaction” and therefore, I truly believe that the collaborative effort and synergistic interaction of all members of an academy working together as a team will ultimately lead to great accomplishments and achieving successful goals.
I am excited to be part of a global comunity in which the IAP can actively share its educational mission and scientific projects worldwide.
Sincerely, Esther Diana Rossi MD, PhD, MIAC
